Fragment in Tact

2025

Fragment in Tact is a series of clay sculptures inspired by ancient small terracotta figures from the university collection, such as theater statuettes. These figures were originally painted in vivid, polychromatic colours intended to convey a sense of realism, an effect that, from a contemporary perspective, can now appear unfamiliar or even ‘wrong.’ Over time, much of this paint has faded, leaving the figures in their raw, earthy brown-beige clay tones. My work engages with the intensity of these original colours, tones now largely lost, creating a dialogue between the ancient past and a contemporary reinterpretation.

The abstract series Veiled and Fragment explore surfaces and forms that resonate the textures and tactile qualities of classical statues, engaging with the materiality and physical presence of these ancient works.

The work was created in connection with the exhibition “Xammlung”, organised by the artist group Guirlanden in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology at Justus Liebig University, Giessen, Germany.

The project was supported by the Danish Art Foundation and the City of Aarhus.
